In which industries is acrylonitrile used most?

Acrylonitrile is made of propylene and ammonia as raw materials by oxidation reaction and refining process.  Is a kind of organic compound, chemical formula is C3H3N, is a colorless liquid with pungent odor, flammable, its vapor and air can form an explosive mixture, in case of open fire, high heat is easy to cause combustion, and release toxic gases, and oxidants, strong acids, strong bases, amines, bromine reaction.

It is mainly used as raw material for acrylic fiber and ABS/SAN resin. In addition, it is widely used in the production of acrylamide, paste and adiponitrile, synthetic rubber,Latex, etc.

Acrylonitrile market applications

Acrylonitrile is an important raw material of three synthetic materials (plastic, synthetic rubber, synthetic fiber). The downstream consumption of acrylonitrile is concentrated in the three fields of ABS, acrylic and acrylamide, which accounted for more than 80% of total consumption of acrylonitrile.  In recent years, with the development of home appliances and automotive industries, China has become one of the world’s fastest growing acrylonitrile market consumption.  Downstream products are widely used in household appliances, clothing, automobiles, medicine and other areas of the national economy.

Acrylonitrile is manufactured by oxidation reaction and refining process of propylene and ammonia water. It is widely used in the production of resin and acrylic fiber industry. Carbon fiber is the application field with rapid growth of demand in the future.

As one of the important downstream applications of acrylonitrile, carbon fiber is a new material which is mainly researched and developed in China.  Carbon fiber has become an important part of lightweight materials, and gradually from the past metal materials, has become a core application material in the civil and military fields.

With the continuous rapid economic development of our country, the demand for carbon fiber and its composite material is surging.  According to relevant statistics, China’s demand for carbon fiber reached 48,800 tons in 2020, an increase of 29% compared with 2019.

With the continuous development of science and technology, the acrylonitrile market shows a great development trend:

One is propane as raw material acrylonitrile production line in the gradual promotion;

Second, the research of new catalysts is still the research topic of domestic and foreign scholars;

Third, large-scale device;

Fourth, energy saving and emission reduction, process optimization is increasingly important;

Fifth, wastewater treatment has become an important research content.
